Various Artists: Masked and Anonymous
Directed by Larry Charles (Seinfeld) and starring Bob Dylan (in his first credited dramatic role in 16 years), Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Penelope Cruz, and Jessica Lange, Masked and Anonymous follows a wandering troubadour named Jack Fate (Dylan), who's been sprung from jail to play a dubious benefit concert. The soundtrack features 14 Dylan songs, four of which Dylan performs in the film in new versions. He recorded the traditional songs "Dixie" and "Diamond Joe" for the first time and offers new performances of "Cold Irons Bound" and "Down in the Flood." The remaining Dylan songs are rendered by other artists, including Shirley Caesar, whose gospel reading of "Gotta Serve Somebody" appeared on a recent album of the same name, and gospel legends Dixie Hummingbirds' "City of Gold," a previously unreleased Dylan song.
The Dixie Hummingbirds track is from their 2003 album Diamond Jubilation. Levon Helm and Garth Hudson play on this recording, together with Larry Campbell, Tony Garnier and other members of Dylan's '90s touring band.
There's also a limited edition version of this album, adding a bonus hybrid disc (in standard audio, super audio, and 5.1 surround sound) with seven tracks from Dylan's newly remastered catalogue.
