The Band Guestbook, April '96

Below are the entries in the Band guestbook from April 1996.

A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

From: fountain city wisconsin u.s.a.

I'm so pleased to have found this site I've been a fan since the beginning. The Band's music has always been popular here in the upper Mississippi River Valley (probably stopped a few people from becoming total deadheads besides). Thanks for the lyrics and cords to Acadian Driftwood a song that I've always wanted to play and sing and could not quite figure out I think it was that Ebmaj9 thanks again and take care

Des Thomas

From: Cape Town, South Africa

My first album of the Band was Stagefright many years ago.I couldn't believe that music like that existed. I remember the Band being the first rock and roll group ever getting a cover feature in Time magazine. The Band has many fans in South Africa who would love to see them out here. Keep up the good work.

From: Livonia, New York (South of Rochester)

I've been enjoying this page for over a year...Great stuff! I had concert tickets to a show that was cancelled in 1976, a few years later, I couldn't get tickets and sat outside the Greek Theater in L.A. and listened. In 1995, I saw The Band in a small venue in Rochester, so close I could have shaken their hands. Sadly, without Robbie and Richard... The show was still great. The heart of the Band still beats! Jan, keep up the good work and thanks for helping keep The Band alive.

I am so pleased to find so many freinds of the greatest Canadian band to ever bless the stage. I measure the quality of music by the way in which it can move me. If anyone has ever had the pleasure to see this band live(with or without Robbie and Richard), I am sure you will agree that they can bring you to the point of tears. Experience the greatest voices, players and arrangements by a bunch of good old Canadians and a hot drummer from Arkansas. I also noticed that many of you have only recently discovered the boys. Check out "the Last Waltz" at your local video store. I still think it's the greatest Rock Movie ever made. You should also read Levon's Book "Wheel's on Fire" for some great(if not slightly biased) insight into the Band. Cheers!

From: Peterborough, Ontario (Canada)

This isn't "Just another Whistle Stop"! What a treat to find so many gems about the greatest group ever. I'll be back many times, just finding all the albums with Band connections. In fact, as soon as I'm done here, I've got to pull out my old Jesse Winchester record and listen for *that* sound. Last saw The Band in the summer of '94, at Ontario Place. After the show, they all left on Ronnie Hawkins' cruiser. I had this fanatsy of dropping a note in Mr. Hawkins' mailbox (he lives just a couple of kilometres up the road) and inviting them all around for a meal. Corny, I know, but these people have offered so much over the years. I want to shake their hands!!! Thank you for offering such a treasure. Debbie

Dear Jan, Thank you for all the work. Having tried to put together a web page of my own I can say it's a lot of hard work! Anyway, I hope to write more later, once I explore around a little more. d.

I'm glad to see there are other fans out there. I've enjoyed the band ever since Big Pink came out in the late sixties. Keep up the good work.

Bob Totty-Kublawi

From: Shenandoah Junction, WV

I first saw The Band three years ago. They were opening for Little Feat at Merriwether Post Pavilion, near Baltimore. I didn't know much about them, but their show was awesome, and I recognized a number of songs I didn't realize that they did. Your page has given me a place to learn more. Thanks!!

Fri Apr 26 21:38:15 MET DST 1996

Rick Churchill

From: Deep River, CT

A long time ago, in a high school civics class, I happened upon a brief magazine article which mentioned that a "new" group was, rather quietly, about to release their 2nd album. They looked very cool (unlike most groups in 1969) and I was intrigued, so I bought that album. "The Band" just killed me then, and THE Band still kills me all these years later. Thanks Jan, for making a place for the finest rock and roll band ever.

From: Woodstock,NY

Great Site! It's funny is I live near Woodstock and Big Pink is a 1/2 mile away and I walk my dog there all the time. I supplied tape for the new album with my company Markertek and just want to say Hi! guys! Garth,Levon,Butch, Aaron H. and Marie... See you after tour.

Bill Harnack

From: Buffalo, New York
Home page: http://home.earthlink.net/~ecoedit/

Being from Buffalo, across the border, well, it's a real heartfelt connection that goes back deep into the sixties and my youth. Big Pink is of course once in a lifetime. But Jerico proves they're as vibrant as ever. Saw them here at the old train station in the early '80s (what a waste of building that is now) without J.R., and I knew then it wasn't over--a great concert! Too much to say, too little space. A real class site.

Best WWW info. for the Band fan. In this age where mediocrity rules in the pop music world, thank goodness for the Band !

From: Hatfield, PA

I've seen all the recent concerts in this area since the release of Jericho. The Music is better now than ever before, although, the last show I've seen at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia was pretty poor.

Mon Apr 22 16:52:34 MET DST 1996

Jay Lyon

From: Seton Lake, B.C.(Canada)

Jan, you must be a true Band fan. I've allways thought that one of their greatest assests was the class they brought to everything they released. I see that same commitment from your web page. I've been I follower since I first crept down the back sta irs of the Brass Rail in London, Ont. in the early sixties. It's great to see there are so many like-minded fans out there. I too think that Rock of Ages is just about the best live album ever. My favourite all time band by a long shot. Hope they come bac k to B.C. soon. Keep up the good work, Jan.

Mon Apr 22 15:12:41 MET DST 1996

Will Elkins

From: Vicksburg, Mississippi

Thanks for placing the lyrics on the net. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is probably my favorite song of all time. It was great to find a Band home page. Their music is of great significance to a true southerner, even though they were not born here.

Mark Gherty

From: Hudson, WI

I saw The Band April 20 in Minneapolis. Great show! this is the fourth time I have seen them. They may be older and heavier, but they play as tight as ever. The concert consisted of an ever blend of the new material and the old. Great show!

Sun Apr 21 21:23:39 MET DST 1996

Peter Kinnear

From: Calgary Alberta Canada

I've been a great fan on the boys since for many years. Most recently, my wife and I saw them in concert in Calgary in the summer of 94. As with Dylan, I think the band captures the soul of the boomers. Those boomers that think a bit anyway. The boys are back through Calgary in a few months - and I'm looking foward to it. Band fans know that "big pink" is not vulgar.

Hi. Greetings from Brisbane. Is Buddy Cage still playing with you as he was in June 1988 in Brisbane? What about Blondie Chaplin? We still see Ritchie Yorke, who you introduced to us in 1988. Thanks for the contact. Loved "Jericho" . Come back to Brisbane.

Great job--saw the boys april 13 in a 500 seat hall in Asheville; unbelievably good; played about half from two recent releases and half older; Jim, Richard, and Randy are great--fit right in; Levon's voice better than ever, Rick and Garth very sharp. Maybe best song was The Weight, still good after all these years . . .

I found out last week the at The Band is coming to Albuquerque. I'm beside myself with anticipation. I last saw The Band at a festival in Austin 20 years ago. Drove from Minnesota to be there. Have since seen Rick with Paul Butterfield and Levon wi th the Cate Brothers. But there is nothing like seeing these guys together. To see Garth spin his spells on the accordion or the organ live is a real treat.

From: Indianapolis

I have been less than impressed with the state of popular music today, then two years ago I was given tickets to a country show here. I cannot even tell you who was there, except for little known LeRoy Parnell who perform an almost perfect rendition of The Weight. It was a moment that renewed my long standing faith in those performers who pay homage to those that came before. If you get the chance, the performance is worht the price of a ticket (at most venues). I am happy to find this page and read of other Band fans.

FYI: I went to "An Evening With The Band" at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame & Museum (4-15-96) in Cleveland; they had a slight change of plans. Originally it was intended to be a interview/question & answer period but they decided to play music only in stead. The audience was not disappointed at all with the change of plans. They played an acoustic set which included much of their new material (including a song about Jesse James that Levon sang--I've never heard this song. Can somebody help me out? Is it on some compialation recording?) They jammed for under an hour & left everyone wanting more. They will be playing their electric set tonight at the Odeon in the Cleveland Flats district. Hey--as an added bonus for me, my girlfriend & I got to mee t Garth after the show as he got on the tour bus. He was very friendly and took time to sign autographs! Ahhh...the life of a Band Fan! From: Pittsburgh, PA.

Am 29 years old and became a fan two years before THE LAST WALTZ. I truly beleive that they are the most under-rated rock bands and Robbie Robertson is one of the most prolific and under-rated song writers in Rock. Have seen the group-in different configurations since the late 1980's.Also an avid DEAD HE AD-I loved hearing the DEAD perform 'The Weight' and the Garcia Band do 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'. They have provided me with some of my greatest concert experiences-note Garth's sax solo during the break in 'It Makes No Difference'. Their mus ic will never grow old to me and even though I've seen 'The Last Waltz' a million times, I'm sure I'll view it another million!

They are and still musical master minds. All songs are inspiring. The Last Waltz is the best musical documentry of all time. Also who can't love Richard Emanual.

I cannot express enough how wonderful this page is. The Band was the first subject I looked up when I got online, and fortunately I ended up here. Keep up the excellent work, Jan. I'm waiting with great anticipation for the April 16th show in Cleve land. Anyone else going to be there? I'll be the girl in the front screaming "LEEEEEVONNNNNNN!" From: Santa Rosa, Ca.

As a Drummer for thirty three years. I can't describe the influence that Levon's drumming had on me. Incredable syncopation. Shuffles. Tom Tom cross melodies... Robbi influenced a whole generation of signature guitar intonations and flavors! How many musicians can tear apart a Hammond Organ like Garth? Syncopated bass lines with Rick.. The sorrowful, haunting vocals of Richard.. they were the pioneers in many facets of music innovation.. Just keep listening the the three - way lead vocal changes ala: Acadian Driftwood and Daniel & the Sacred Harp...You'll get the feel. No group can achieve such seminal success on various musical creations as did The Band!

Long live the Band!! I got to meet Rick (3x), Richard (RIP), Garth and Levon (2x) several times when they played a local club - my band Sandoz is heavily influenced by these guys and opened for Rick & Richard (3 months before Richard died) and Rick an d Butterfield (Butterfield's last public performance). Great guys, great musicians!!

Great web page. Now let's get everybody to drop a letter to Capitol and demand that they put out remastered versions of the "Big Pink" and "The Band." These two works of art were not given the same fine treatment as the rest of the catalog. Also, how can we get Levon's "American Son" put out on CD? It's just not the same without Richard or Robbie but it's nice to see the remaining originals working a steady gig.
P.S. In the lyrics page to "Acadian Driftwood," Plains of Abraham should be capitalized. It's a specific battlefield area in Quebec (most beautiful, too). Keep up the fine work, Jan. This site makes all the techno-hype worth it.

Tonight's my first time here and I'm sure to be back. Thanks Jan. I've been listening to the Band since I was a kid back in '68. Met Levon out back of convocation hall at a concert in Toronto, Nov. '94. Saw a short guy with a beard holding a paper bag with a quart of beer come out of a car by the tour bus. Said "Hey you're Levon Helm!" He said "That's right." I said "I just drove 500 miles to see you guys" Levon replied while he pumped my hand "Thanks son. Hope you enjoy the show."
