Mercury Rev: Double Plays

[cover art]

V2 Australia assembled a two-fer of All Is Dream from 2001 and Deserter's Songs from 1998 (yes, in reverse order), presenting a strange mirror image. The former album (Deserter's Songs) is a luxuriant, elegant ride through orchestral arrangements, expansive songwriting, and lush production while the latter's shambolic, playful, and multi-textural vibe is utterly idiosyncratic and off-kilter. For those who have neither album, this is a wondrous ride into nether-pop's accessible yet wonderfully strange sonic universe.
--Thom Jurek, All-Music Guide
